Indiana Medical Insurance Laws, Regulations & Policies

There are several Indiana health insurance laws and regulations that are put in place to protect policyholders living in the state. State law allows Indiana insurance providers to require applicants to provide information about their health history and current health conditions. From there, insurance companies can set monthly premiums as they see fit or decline the application.

Indiana residents who have been turned down for coverage because of a pre-existing health condition can get coverage through the Indiana health insurance high risk pool, the Indiana Comprehensive Health Insurance Association (ICHIA). To learn more about ICHIA, visit this informational website.

Indiana also requires that all policies be guaranteed renewable, which means that once an Indiana resident is accepted into a plan, Indiana insurance providers are not allowed to cancel coverage because the policyholder becomes sick or gets injured. State law also requires all Indiana medical insurance plans to cover certain medical services, including:

  • Screening for breast, cervical, colorectal, and prostate cancer
  • Continuity of care for pregnant women
  • Diabetic supplies and care

Children’s Special Health Care ServicesThe purpose of The Children’s Special Health Care Services (CSHCS) program is to provide financial assistance for critical medical treatment to children with serious medical conditions. Visit their website.

Indiana Health Insurance High Risk PoolThe Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act established temporary national high risk pools to provide people with pre-existing conditions health insurance coverage. The Pre-Existing Condition Insurance Plan (PCIP) in Indiana runs similar to regular Indiana health insurance plans and requires enrollees to pay monthly premiums and out-of-pocket costs.

Indiana residents enrolled in PCIP pay around the same amount that an individual without a medical condition pays for health insurance. The estimated monthly premium costs for Indiana residents are $310 for ages 0 to 34; $372 for ages 35 to 44; $476 for ages 45 to 54; $662 for ages 55 and older. The yearly deductible that must be met before health insurance coverage kicks in is set at $2,500 and annual out-of-pocket limits are $5,950. Residents who are eligible for the plan will have access to health insurance coverage for prescription drugs, emergency services, doctor and hospital visits, and more.

Indiana residents are eligible if they are a United States’ citizen, have an existing medical condition, and have been without health insurance for six months. For more information on the Indiana health insurance high risk pools visit http://www.healthcare.gov/index.html.
