Michigan Medical Insurance Laws, Regulations & Policies
There are several Michigan health insurance laws and regulations that are put in place to protect policyholders living in the state. Residents are guaranteed to be able to purchase a Michigan medical insurance plan through Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan. BCBS of Michigan also cannot raise your insurance premiums because of a health condition. Other Michigan insurance providers may exclude coverage or deny applications based on health history or pre-existing health conditions.
Residents are also guaranteed to be able to obtain coverage through any individual HMO (Health Maintenance Organization) plan in Michigan during a 30-day open enrollment period. Visit the Michigan Office of Financial and Insurance Regulation online to learn more about HMOs in Michigan. Additionally, small groups with two to 50 people are guaranteed to be able to obtain health coverage in Michigan, as well.

Michigan Health Insurance High Risk PoolThe Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act established temporary national high risk pools to provide health insurance to those with pre-existing conditions. Residents of Michigan with pre-existing conditions are able to get health insurance coverage from the Pre-Existing Condition Insurance Plan (PCIP). This works similar to regular Michigan health insurance plans and requires enrollees to pay monthly premiums and out-of-pocket costs.
Enrollees in the Michigan PCIP pay around the same amount that people without medical conditions pay for health insurance. The deductible that must be met before health insurance benefits begin is $1,000. The out-of-pocket limit for the Michigan plans is set at $5,950. Those eligible for the Michigan health insurance program will have coverage for prescription drugs, hospital and doctor visits, emergency services, and more.
To qualify for the program, individuals must be a United States’ citizen, have an existing medical condition, and have been without health insurance for at least six months. For more information on the Michigan health insurance high risk pools visit http://www.healthcare.gov/index.html.
